Energy Infrastructure plugin
Plugin: published and available in ChatGPT. The read-only research service is live and available without an account or API key. To find the plugin, search ChatGPT for the exact name GovBot Energy Infrastructure. See also the GovBot OpenAI plugin directory.
A read-only research plugin for public U.S. energy infrastructure records from EIA and a DOE NETL-hosted HIFLD transmission-line snapshot. Developed by Ideation Lab, Corp.
Data the service holds
- Generator inventory: the public EIA-860M preliminary release for August 2026. It uses the Operating and Operating_PR workbook sheets. These include operating, standby and out-of-service statuses; a listed generator is not a guarantee of current availability.
- Map layers: eleven dated public EIA map layers. Each layer's source date is stored with it and reported in answers.
- Transmission lines: a held copy of DOE NETL’s transmission-line layer, credited to HIFLD 2022 and retrieved by NETL in 2023. It contains 94,216 hosted map records with reported owner, voltage and status where supplied. Coverage may be incomplete; status is historical. Query geometry is generalized, not a survey.
All data is held with the service. Your queries are not forwarded to EIA or any other agency at runtime. No user API key or agency account is required.
Official sources: EIA-860M (eia.gov/electricity/data/eia860m/) and EIA maps (eia.gov/maps/).
Transmission records: HIFLD, hosted by DOE NETL. Includes data from © OpenStreetMap contributors, available under ODbL 1.0. Original source credits remain in each record. Free public data: generalized transmission database and transformation notes. Both downloads are available without an account or API key.
Research operations
find_power_plants_near_point- Lists plants from the held operable-generator inventory near a public research point you provide, with reported status distinctions.
summarize_generating_capacity- Summarizes nameplate and net summer capacity in MW for a state, source balancing-authority code, or both, with source-group counts and missingness.
find_fuel_facilities_near_point- Lists fuel facilities from the EIA map layers near a public research point.
find_pipelines_in_area- Lists pipeline records from the EIA map layers that intersect a bounded area.
find_transmission_lines_in_area- Finds generalized transmission-line records in a public area, keeping historical owner/status labels, voltage kV, inferred values and unknowns explicit.
describe_energy_layers- Describes the held datasets, their source dates, fields and known limits.
Three research workflows
- generator-mix-brief: a dated generator-capacity inventory brief for a state or source balancing-authority code.
- nearby-energy-records: plant, fuel-facility and requested transmission records near a public point.
- pipeline-corridor-records: pipeline and requested transmission records within a bounded area, with separate source dates and units.
Watch the ChatGPT walkthrough
This short, silent video walks through the GovBot Energy Infrastructure plugin running in a private ChatGPT workspace. A text description of the video follows it.
Download the walkthrough video (MP4)
The video has no audio. It is an edited sequence of actual screenshots from the plugin's interface in a private ChatGPT workspace. It pauses on each screen to give time to read, so it is not a continuous real-time recording. The setup shown has one connected app and three workflow skills.
The walkthrough shows:
- Generator capacity in megawatts (MW), with the date of each figure.
- Storage energy in megawatt-hours (MWh), reported separately from power capacity in MW.
- Source-attributed records of nearby energy facilities.
- Historical, generalized research on pipelines and transmission lines, with the time period and limits of each source.
The video also shows the plugin declining one request. A follow-up question then confirms that the plugin does not cover outage records or restoration estimates.
How to read the results
- Capacity figures are generating capacity in MW. They are not generation (MWh), interconnection capacity or spare capacity.
- Battery storage energy (MWh) is reported separately from MW capacity.
- Results include source dates, record counts and missingness. Known-value capacity subtotals and approximate mapped distances are derived measures; missing source values are not filled with zero.
- Transmission kV is voltage, not power MW or available transfer capacity. A nearby line and plant are not proof of an electrical connection.
- Historical and live outage records and restoration estimates are not included.
- Map geometry is approximate and has the limits of the source layers.
Appropriate use
- Use public research points, states or source balancing-authority codes only. Do not enter a home address or your device location.
- Results do not give exact pipeline field routes. Do not use them for digging, excavation or safety decisions. Contact your local one-call or 811 service before you dig.
- Results are not site certification, engineering advice or financial advice.
